We’ve all read about the importance of exercise and increasing our health.  Research has shown there are recommendations for increasing our health and fitness that include walking at least 10,000 steps a day, eating well, keeping hydrated and getting the proper amounts of sleep.

With all of this information and so much more, why aren’t we a country of super healthy individuals?  The key to unlock the door could be one word, enjoyment.   Unfortunately, exercise can be repetitive, boring, too rigorous or even difficult.  Bringing back the fun in moving may be the one thing that changes the dynamic of how we feel about exercise.  How we feel about exercise often dictates how often we move.

Try these simple changes and see if it helps kick start your relationship with moving more.   Go back to what you liked when you were a kid – biking, swimming, walking, you pick.  If you like the solitude and peace, skip the gym and get outside.   If you prefer music and friends, try a class like Zumba, Pilates, yoga, or total body conditioning.     If you prefer the privacy of your own home, use on-demand for a workout or if you’re on the road try a fitness app.  The key is to make it fun and make it yours.

Adding a little movement to your work day can work just as well to increase your energy and your fitness level.  Stuck at a desk all day?Stand for a minute or two each hour, lift a knee toward the ceiling or scrunch your toes increase your circulation.  Put your feet on an upside-down waste paper basket under your desk to stretch your hamstrings (muscles in the back of your thighs) to reduce any lower back pain.

Keep the fun in fitness and exercise becomes something you enjoy.  Small steps lead to healthy habits.  Pick one thing to try this week and book it, you’ll feel great just getting started.
